Embracing God's Work Despite Ourselves

Acts 7:9-16

Stephen is charged with speaking out against the temple.  In response he speaks of Abraham, telling the court that when God visited Abraham in Mesopotamia, a long way from the temple indeed, God was demonstrating that long before there was this holy place the temple, there was a holy people to whom God had pledged Himself for them to have a purpose: worship.  But as Stephen moves into the story of Joseph, Abraham’s grandson, he demonstrates that though God had pledged Himself to His holy people, God’s people rejected His chosen leader. But God vindicated Joshua using the foolish things of the world for the ultimate purpose of fulfilling His promise to Abraham: the deliverance of His people.  God’s people have rejected Him and His work since the very foundation of the world.  What would He have us know since we too are His people?
